My comments on that RTD interview from The Daily Mail (As [livejournal.com profile] lizbee noted, the link is spoilerific).

Most people on my f'list who've noted this, have focused on his comments about Martha, but my eye latched on to this bit:

"The chemistry between the Doctor and his assistant is the emotional dynamic of the show, with the flamboyant sexuality of Capatain Jack ... as a disruptive axis."

Funny, when I was watching the show, in Old School, the emotional dynamic was all about saving the planet, galaxy, or universe, from the Baddie. That's what I watched it for, and I learned from that, that love of the world (however big that world is) is just as important as love for each other. And love was more than "flamboyant sexuality" -- it was teaching Leela about "Big Box little, Little Box big," and teaching Jamie to read, and helping Tegan with her nightmares, and goading Sarah Jane to overcome her fears, and appreciating the Daisiest daisy, and locking out your own granddaughter, to let her find her own independance, even though it near breaks your own heart, and...

Yeah.

[livejournal.com profile] alto2 suggests that we watch Season 20, next year, instead. I, personally, think that's a wonderful idea...

Words of wisdom. I ♥ old Who.

Thank you. I almost wrote that love of the world was more important than love for individual people... But that's not what Old School was really about. You loved the world because it had people in it. And you loved the people because they are part of the world.

You loved the world by loving the people. And you loved people by saving the world.

Good point. In fact, one I agree with so much that I already wrote my own post on the subject a month and a half ago so I can link to that here instead of go on at length now.

If I had to pick a favorite season it'd be Season 22 1985.

I remember that post. I even replied to it (http://scarfman.livejournal.com/203801.html?thread=565273#t565273).

And rereading that reply, it's suddenly clear to me why I really, really, really do not like a Doctor with a Mission to Punish (which seems to be something I disagree with [livejournal.com profile] parrotfish about): Love and vengence do not mix.

A Doctor with a Mission to Punish the baddies would never have given the "Do I have the right?" speach in Genesis of the Daleks.

OH I LOVE YOU SO MUCH. that's so true and everything that is so wrong about who and sometimes they almost touch on it and it almost looks like doctor who again but then they just fail and go back to being all about Tennant having a facial expression and they just lose at quiet brilliance and it's SO SAD. But your words! So true!

Thank you. I really love to be loved. Maybe I shouldn't. Maybe that makes me shallow and selfish. But I do.

Maybe it's better that I'm glad I'm not alone with my disapointment. So I will say that, instead of the first thing, next time, if anyone asks.

Anyway -- there was a lot of hoopla when New Who came out about how Russell T. Davies was changing the Look of Doctor Who. But really, I think his biggest change was to change the way it feels.

It makes you human. Welcome to the human race.

And, I forgot to mention, I agree with everything you said up there. I love NewWho -- the slick look, the pacing, etc. -- but I also miss my OldWho. And you've very nicely put into words exactly how NewWho fails in comparison.

I liked the episodes of New Who that I've seen -- very shiny, and the 45 minutes seemed to pass quickly.

But I quickly realized the episodes were like a Chinese Take-out dinner: an hour later, it left me feeling empty.

Agreeing with drox, there's nothing more normal than loving to be loved, not shallow or selfish or anything of the kind. ::loves you::

I'm so so so glad every time people point out that I'm not alone with my disappointment. Sometimes it feels like it with everyone on my flist being so happy about the new who. When the master came back, and he was JUST THE SAME as the new doctor and couldn't be allowed to be older or less hyper or remotely out of synch with 'oh isn't everything fun, aren't we aware that we're being tongue in cheek about everything that was great about the original', and everyone was so squeeful, I don't get it at all.

I really thought at the beginning that he was going to manage to keep some of the sort of feelings of real who in there, but it faded quite fast. There were a couple of episodes with Ecclestone where it might have been alright and I thought maybe he was taking it in a different direction to what actually happened, and I think it would have been quite interesting if Ecclestone stayed and stuff, but in the end it's just come out rubbish and made me sad. Oh well.

OMG yesyesyes. I've been worried about the direction the show's taken ever since all the handholding in S1 (though I still think S1 was the best of the three so far, because of the nasty Rose dynamic in S2, and then the crap they pulled with Martha in S3, though S3 was a bit improvement on S2). As soon as we had DW shippers, and shipping comms, and the fandom went insane...yeah. That sense of impending doom came into play, and it's been downhill ever since.

You know, for as much as Rusty claims to be an old-school fanboy, I never cease to be amazed by just how much he doesn't get it. At all.

If he was ever a fanboy, he was probably one of the ones who just couldn't get on with other fan friends, and laughed at all the wrong parts of their jokes, and made inappropriate comments 'in jest,' that made others uncomfortable. So after a while, they stopped inviting him over for viewing parties.

And he thought: "If I brought the show back, then they'd have to love me! That would show them!"

I've met other fans like that...

So that's where that whole Daleks vs. Cybermen thing came from! I always had a vision of Rusty sitting in the living room in front of the TV with his action figures, busting up the Daleks with the Cybermen and vice versa.

He needs to move on and we need to convince Moffat to take over. Moffat gets it. (Anyone who can write a spoof like "Fatal Death" gets it. Rusty couldn't write a spoof like that to save his life.)

Yes indeed. And lots shiny explosions, and space ships crashing into buildings and... yeah!

"Kaquush! Quee-ooh! Boom!"
